There are three steps in transferring film. The first step is to organize your originals in order of appearance. This may be difficult if you don’t know what’s on the film or the reels are not marked.
You could use a viewer or rent one of our viewing rooms. Just remember that old film may be very fragile and each time you run it through a projector you may cause additional damage or destroy the footage.
You could also import directly into the computer. This is the safest way. You may only have a couple chances to run your delicate film through any type of device. Film can become very brittle and any splices may break. If your film has a vinegar odor to it, you probably have a case of the “vinegar syndrome” where the fixer was not properly washed out during development process and now needs to be transferred right away.
Pre-Import Options Include:
Film Cleaning and Lubrication
Re-Spooling The Film Onto Larger Reels
Inspection And Re-Splicing Old Splices
At Act One, we offer two methods of importing:
Standard Transfer:
Here we load your film onto a standard projector and the image is shot onto a diffusion glass and then image is captured through a mirror box with a 3CCD camera. The images are then recorded directly onto a tape media (VHS or MiniDV). This process is to ensure that we capture every frame.
We can also import your movies into our MAC computer system to edit the reels and/or export to a hard drive for you to edit. These files are captured in a QuickTime .mov format. The files can also be converted into any other format or compressed to use on the web viewed and on computers.
All 16mm film and movies with sound are captured with this method.
Premium Transfer:
Here, the video is shot directly off of the film’s emulsion. We use a high end 3CCD capture device with a microscope type of lens. The image is crystal clear and is for those who only want to do transfer their film once, in the best quality possible, with true frame by frame recording. These files will be in an .avi file format. These files can also be converted into other formats for Mac editing or compressed to use on the web or computers. This transfer method is similar in quality to the highest end Rank Citinel transfer systems used to transfer 35mm film.

Crash Edits:
If you have multiple originals, we can "Crash" portions together in our duplication department. The image on the screen may break up for a few seconds after each crash edit. Some color correction can be done during this direct transfer process but is limited.
Add Music Or Narration:
Normally, with most video transfers, the audio is already included on the original. If not, we can add music or a voice over narration to enhance your show. We can use your originals or recordings, or record new material in our studio or edit suites. Check with customer service for the additional cost involved. Easy Listening, Classical, or Soft Jazz recorded for entire length of order (this is generic, non-copyrighted music)
Chapters and Titles:
Titles and chapters markers are additional. If not indicated, the movie will play from start to end.
Copies:
Copies of your finished project are available along with custom printing, packaging, labeling and shrink wrapping.
Printing and Packaging:
We can label your new masters with black or color printing. We offer an economical black text print with up to 4 lines from our standard template as well as custom art or we can import your own artwork.
Prints From Film Frames:
We can make 4x6 photos from your movie footage! There are a number of reasons for wanting to grab a still photo from your old movie film. Often you don’t have any other images of a loved one or even your childhood home. Low resolution prints can be made from a computer file at 640 x 480, or the frames can be scanned in our scanning department to give you around 1200 x 1000 resolution. Just show us exactly where the image is and we’ll do the rest.
